Dear Ann, 

The sad news of Gene's death has come to me from Victor Hom, a mutual friend and colleague of Gene's and mine. Sadly, it has been many years -- possibly even more than a decade -- since you, Gene and I have been in each other's company.  I recall with pleasure and will never forget the hospitality you and Gene bestowed on me whenver I was a guest at your home.
  Gene and I had a great amount of professional interaction when he was a hydrometeorological expert working with Jake Douma and Earl Eiker in the Hydraulics and Hydrology Division at Corps of Engineers HQ and I worked in the Corps New England H&H office as chief of Hydraulics and Water Quality.  Our professional relationship was an excellent one.  I have especially fond memories of when, back in the 1970's and early 80's, he and I served together on the the Corps Committee overseeing the Streambank Erosion Protection Demonstration and Evaluation Project,for which Gene was HQ manager, and for which the Congress was generous with the money but stingy with time to accomplish it.  Gene and Ioften would be together on trips to visit and evaluate those demonstration projects our Distict offices had built on rivers all over the United States. We had productive, hard-working days and socially enjoyable evenings together with our fellow colleagues.  Gene was a respected colleague and a dear friend.  His passing saddens me deeply. 
    To you, Ann, I extend my sypathy.

I first met Gene at a flood warning conference almost 20 years ago, and I found him to be a wonderful teacher and friend as he helped me along my professional journey.  Gene also helped me to get admitted into graduate school (late in life), with a letter of personal reference to the dean.  I will truly miss Gene, my life was enriched through my association with him.

I could always depend on Gene as a loyal and dedicated person to get the job done.
He was a friend to me as we took on a broad range of professional activities. 
I know he will be greatly missed by family, friends, and professional colleagues. 

Gene, and Ann, have often been in my thoughts since I retired.  Ann, our sympathy goes out to you at this difficult time.  We would love to hear from you in the days ahead.
