Mack Quick passed away peacefully at home in Clarkston, Michigan surrounded by his loving family on January 15, 2020. Mack was born in Romeo, Michigan in January 1924, the middle of 9 children born to Lloyd and Nina Quick. He was preceded in death by five of his beloved siblings; Wesley, Charles, James, Myrene, and Dean. He is survived by his younger sisters Mary Jean and Allene, and his younger brother Pete.
Mack attended Romeo High School, and after graduating in 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and served several years in the South Pacific. Like many of the ‘Greatest Generation’, he rarely spoke of his war experience, calling little attention to the nearly 3 years of sacrifice he made to help preserve our sacred freedoms. He had a quiet yet fierce determination to succeed at whatever he undertook, whether it was on the football field, basketball court, baseball diamond, or track in high school where he excelled in sports; or at the negotiating table during his very successful career as a fastener industry executive. While always modest as it related to his own accomplishments, Mack delighted in boasting about his children and grandchildren’s achievements.
Mack met the love of his life, Joan Gilbertson after graduating from the University of Michigan. They married in 1952 and had two very fortunate children. After 54 years of enjoying the company of each other and family, and the gift of countless wonderful friendships, Joan preceded her husband in death in 2006. Recovering from this loss was difficult, however, with the loving attention of his Mariner Sands friends, to whom we are eternally grateful, Mack reclaimed an active and fulfilling social life.
Mack and Joan loved to golf and entertain friends. The welcome mat at their Florida home said it all: “If we are not at home, we’re on the golf course.” They also thoroughly enjoyed hosting tailgate parties at University of Michigan football games where they could combine their passions for U of M sports and entertaining friends.
Mack is survived by his grateful children, Gregory (Krystine) and Jane; his grandchildren Kate, Clare, Margaret, Joseph (Stephanie), James (Sophia), and Michael (Lauren); and his great grandchildren Samantha, Michael, Mason, and Asher. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the wonderful home care and hospice professionals who provided such compassionate care for Mack over the past two years.
There will be a private celebration of life memorial at a later date. Please visit www.nationalcremation/bloomfield.com to share your memories with the family.
