Mr. Smith was born on February 6, 1941 to Bynum and Emma Leah Ashcraft Smith. He graduated from Thrasher High School in 1960. After graduation he began a 42 year career as a sewing machine mechanic at Prentiss Manufacturing. There he met his wife, Myrtle Eaton Smith, who he married on February 9, 1962. In 2002, John began a second career in the maintenance department at NEMCC. He worked there until 2011 when he retired. John was known by all his nieces and nephews to have extra change now and then. He helped raise several of them. Therefore he was their favorite "Uncle John".
He was an avid fisherman. He loved to brim and bass fish. He was known for fishing ponds and wherever he could drop a hook.
A Celebration of Life will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, November 22, 2018, at McMillan Funeral Home with Bro. Marty Roberts officiating with Dan Eaton and Jimmy Burcham delivering the eulogy. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Park.
He is survived by a his wife, Myrtle Smith of Blackland; sisters, Mary Dean Smith Pollard, Mildred Smith Craven, Margaret Smith Kennedy (Ira), Joyce Smith Burcham (Jimmy), Judith Smith Saylors all of Booneville and Bonnie Smith Ruesch (Devin) of Hurrican, UT.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bobby M. Smith; brother-in-laws, Q.D. Pollard, Robert Craven and Thermon Saylors; one sister-in-law, Susie Stinnett Smith.
Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at the funeral home.
