Eugene (Gene) Harwell Palmer, Jr. of St. Simons Island, GA beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on June 10, 2018 in his home after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Kathryn (Kathy) Lokey Palmer. His devotion to his family, his wit, and his intellect will be missed by many including his sons, Dr. Eugene Harwell Palmer, III (Cathey) of Pinehurst, NC, and Benjamin Malone Palmer (Kay) of Atlanta, and daughter, Kathryn Palmer Tison (Perry) of Blackshear. He will especially be missed by his grandchildren; Joshua Palmer, Laura Cahoy, Sarah Palmer Smith and Carlin Palmer; Ben, Jr. and Matt Palmer; and Ansley Tison Northcutt and Trey Tison; and great grandchildren, Colin and Kathryn Smith and Sarah Kathryn Northcutt, who affectionately called him “Pop.” Also still surviving is his brother, John Augustus Palmer of St. Simons Island.
Gene was born on August 10, 1934 in Brunswick, GA to the late Eugene Harwell Palmer, Sr. and Elizabeth Malone Palmer, where he attended Glynn Academy and graduated from Georgia Tech Institute of Technology in 1956 with honors. After college, Gene served in the U. S. Army in Huntsville, AL assisting in the development of the Redstone rocket, and started his business career as an Industrial Engineer with Blue Bird Bus Company. He later held various management positions in Alabama and North Carolina with Vanity Fair and Hanes before returning to St. Simons Island with his family in 1971 to care for his brother. Thereafter, Gene established Palmer & Associates, a sales representative within the southeast United States for various industrial pumps and mixer manufacturers.
Gene was an active member of Christ Church Frederica, and an avid golfer, hunter and firearm collector.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 3:00 P.M. at Christ Church Frederica with a reception to follow immediately in the Parish Hall. Prior to the memorial service, a private family interment service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a memorial contribution be made to the Alter Guild, Christ Church Frederica in memory of Eugene and Kathy Palmer, Christ Church Frederica, 6329 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island, GA 31522.
