

Mrs. Melnyk was born February 22, 1922 to Bertha Ames and Harry Stevenson. She was a graduate of Glynn Academy and the University of Georgia.
A blind date to play golf with an Army Sergeant stationed in Brunswick, Nick Melnyk, led to their marriage in 1942. Nick was soon deployed to Europe for the next four years. Mary embarked on a successful career as a Realtor and Insurance Agent.
An outstanding athlete, Mary won the Georgia High School Tennis Championship in 1941 and the Georgia State Ladies Golf Championship in 1946. Her golf exploits continued for decades as she won the Brunswick Country Club Ladies Championship a total of 37 times. In 1989 the Country Club tournament was named the Mary Melnyk Club Championship. She won numerous other golf tournaments throughout Georgia and Florida during her 60 years of competition.
Mary was a loyal member of the First United Methodist Church of Brunswick for 80 years and considered herself to be the "Official Greeter" every Sunday.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas Melnyk.
Mrs. Melnyk is survived by her son, Steven Nicholas Melnyk and wife Debby of Jacksonville, Fl., daughter, Ann Melnyk Beasley and her husband, Jerry of Blythewood, S.C., grandsons John Dalton Melnyk and his wife, Sarah of Atlanta, Ga.., and Steven Butler Melnyk and his wife, Marla of Jacksonville, Fl. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Virginia Mentzer of Wilmington, Delaware.
Memorial Services will be held at 4 PM. Saturday April 16, 2011 in the First United Methodist Church of Brunswick, 1400 Norwich Street, Brunswick, Georgia, 31520, with Rev. Richard Soper officiating.
The family will receive friends after the services in the Welcome Center at the Church.
The family request contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church Welcome Center, Brunswick, Ga.
