August 5, 1943 - December 10, 2019
Michael was born in San Francisco, CA to Francis and Pauline Wong. As a young boy, he enjoyed flying model airplanes with his older brother, Larry, winning many trophies along the way. He was a wrestler at San Leandro High School and graduated from Cal State Hayward majoring in Biology. When the Vietnam War broke out, he enlisted in the army from 1968-1971 and proudly served his country stationed at Phu Bai in 1970. Throughout his life, he had many careers and interests. He was in quality control at Mother’s Cookies, worked as an instrument mechanic and then as a chemist at the Alameda Naval Air Station and worked in property management. He was very active in volunteer organizations: Disabled American Veterans (DAV 77), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW Post 819), National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE 511) and VA Voluntary Services for 20 years. He was a loyal member of the BMW Car Club of America since 1973. He resided in Castro Valley for 31 years.
Michael’s loving family was by his side when he ended his courageous, 16 month battle with pancreatic cancer at the Palo Alto VA Hospital hospice ward. He is missed by his devoted wife of 46 years, Yvonne Wong, son Brian Wong, daughter Becky Wong, son-in-law Tim Grow, two grandchildren Clara and Clark, older brother Larry Wong, and many nieces, nephews and brothers- and sisters-in-law.
