Norvin Joseph Kooke passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. He was 89 years old. He was the devoted husband of Sonja Munster Kooke, for 66 years; loving father of Denise Kooke Zeairs, Tammy Kooke Toole (Darrel), and Cindy Kooke Hager (Timothy); proud grandfather of Jacob Zeairs, Amanda Hager, Jordan Zeairs, Zackary Toole, Timothy Hager, Jr., Emma Toole, Courtney Dupont (Robert), and great-grandfather of Olivia and Alex. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.
Norvin was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Germaine and Henry Kooke, in December of 1933. He graduated from Francis T. Nichols High School, and proudly served in the Navy from 1953 – 1955, as a Shipfitter, Private 3rd Class. After leaving the military, he enjoyed a long career as a Pipefitter, and was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 60 for 70 years.
Norvin’s love-language was “food.” He loved cooking for and feeding his family on holidays and took great pride in always having a freezer stocked with home cooked meals just in case a friend or family member stopped by. After retirement, he crafted and designed a cookbook featuring all of Mrs. Sonja’s recipes and surprised his family by gifting it to them at Christmas. In his spare time, he enjoyed drinking beer in his backyard while working on his favorite hobby – making crab nets. Above all, he was a protector of his family; always ensuring everyone’s needs were met and they were taken care of. In his final years, he found joy in looking after and taking care of his loving wife. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend, and he will be forever missed by those he leaves behind.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. VIRTUE STREET, in Chalmette, from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM. A funeral Mass will begin in Norvin’s memory at 11:00 AM. He will be laid to rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
