Nadine was born July 23, 1935 in San Antonio, New Mexico to Simmie and Jewel Cates. Her full given name was Mavis Nadine Cates but she was called Nadine from birth. She was the 2nd of four children; Clifford Walter, Ramona Laverne and Edward Gene.
The family lived in San Antonio, New Mexico until just before her 6th birthday when they moved with the Holloway and Fulfer families to Modoc County. Simmie was a timber faller and they moved often depending on where his job was but most of her growing years were spent in Modoc County. She attended high school in Alturas. Growing up there she met many of her lifelong friends. The Holloway family first moved from Texas to New Mexico with Nadine’s family and then to California. Her Aunt Lula Holloway, Jewel’s best friend, delivered her and her younger sister and brother. This makes the Holloway’s truly lifelong friends who were, and are still, like family.
In 1952 Nadine married Henry Dorsey in Reno, Nevada. They had three children; Henry Walter, Marvin Kent and Dawna Dee. They lived in Canby until 1961 moving from there to Sloat, followed by Graeagle, and Cromburg. In 1966 they moved to Central Point, Oregon where their children spent most of their school years. In November 1975 she moved to Gerber, California to be near her dad where she met and married Eldon “Bake” Baker in August of 1976. With this marriage, she welcomed 4 daughters and 2 sons to her family: Ann, Gloria, Audrey, Judy, Russel and Mike along with 9 grandchildren and 3 more to be added. Later Walter, Marvin and Dawna would add 7 more grandchildren: Simmie, CJ, Karrie, Nathan, Alyssa, Alaina and Nanci.
After her husband passed away in 2005 she moved to a home on her daughter’s property where she lived until her death on April 22, 2018.
Those who know her will remember her as a vibrant, active and fun loving person. She was sister, mother, aunt and grandma to many. After her sister passed away in 1998 she became mother and grandmother to Mona’s children and grandchildren. She loved being a grandmother and all of her grandchildren can tell of the great and fun times they spent with her. They will tell you she was young at heart.
Nadine is predeceased by her parents, husbands Henry Dorsey and Eldon Baker, stepson Eldon Russel Baker, sister Mona McDonald and brother Clifford Cates.
