
Well known for his sly sense of humor and his pleasing personality, Jack was an accomplished golfer and served on the Fred Haskins Commission. He also loved hunting and fishing.
A graduate of Columbus High School, Jack attended both Auburn and Georgia universities before going to work full time in his family’s optical business on Broad. Later he would own his own business, Winn Optical Company, in Cross Country Plaza. He also traveled for a number of years in the Southeast for the Luxottica Group.
He was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church, which his great-great-great grandfather, Dr. Edwin Louis deGraffenreid, one of the city’s five original commissioners, helped establish in 1828.
Jack was the son of Dr. John H. and Dorothy Clason Winn, long-time Columbus residents. He is survived by his wife, Alma Swift Winn; three children, John Harvey Winn, III, Jewett Winn Rothschild (Alan), and Frances Winn Boyce (Scott), all of Columbus; four grandchildren, Alan Friend Rothschild, III, Caroline Jewett Rothschild, William Chaffin Boyce, and Mary Mackie Boyce. He was preceded in death by his sister, Fleming Winn Venable, and is survived by a brother, William Waddell Winn (Elinor) of Columbus.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Columbus Hospice or Trinity Episcopal Church.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 21, at Trinity Episcopal Church at 11:00 am.
