Gene was born in Brooklyn,NY. On Oct 5, 1942 to the late Dorothy (Conelley) Battenfeld and E. G. Battenfeld. He was a graduate of Cardinal Stepinac High School (1961) and St Leo College (1963), University of Tampa ( BS 1967) and Xavier University (MBA 1969).
Gene worked for many years as a Hospital Administrator for the New York City Health and Hospitals Corp, including President of Saint Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx. He served as CEO of Fieldstone Lodge and B&J Nursing Facilities for over 16 years.
Gene retired after working for 5 years for the Watertown Housings Authority in Watertown CT.
He is survived by sister-in-law: Mary Raynor Battenfeld, of Ballston Spa, NY; and Cathy Battenfeld of Naples, FL. Two nephews: and their spouses, Peter and Ann Marie Battenfeld of Wells, NV; and Michael and Stacy Battenfeld of Rensselaer, NY. His great nephews: Garret and Brent Battenfeld, Michael and Sean Battenfeld; great nieces: Kelli Battenfeld and Ryan Leach; and their children: Annalynn and Matthew and many cousins.
Gene was predeceased in 2006 by his older brother, Frederick E. Battenfeld.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023 at Sacred Heart Church, 910 South Main St., in Southbury, with the Rev. Robert Kwiatkowski, Pastor, officiating. Internment will be at Bridgewater Central Cemetery in the spring.
Friends will be received from 9:00am to 11:00am on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 510 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to The Special Olympics, 94 New Karner Rd., Suite 208, Albany, NY 12203 or to the charity of one’s choice.
A reception will follow the Funeral Mass in Southbury; all are welcome to join his family to celebrate Gene's life.
