She was game to try many of the activities that we had at the community. And most of the time had a huge smile on her face. She passed away peacefully on June 7, 2021 at her home, Brookdale of Alderwood.
She is not survived by any family, but the “family” that mourns her loss includes the staff at the facility that she resided in along with many other lives she touched along her way. She now joins her beloved husband in Eternity.
A Memory from Marta Street;
Somehow, she got the idea that I had $100 bills in my bra that I was throwing around for her… and was always looking for more. For some reason, she thought we had cows in the back, and would be very worried about them when it rained and would ask us often to make sure they were ok. Kenny, our Dining Services Manager clocked Granny doing laps around the building one day…she was consistent and FAST… she could do a lap in under 1 minute, and we lost count of how many times she went around in a day. There are two stories that stick in my mind the most: The first was a time she wanted to go “Go-Go” dancing… when I asked her if she had go-go boots, she asked if it was needed…well of course… well we didn’t have money to buy them – so we decided we were going to rob a bank together.
The other when she was convinced she had gone to Canada… the border guards wouldn’t let her come back, so she had to “flash” them several times before they would let her cross.
As in dementia, afternoons tend to be hard… she would more often than not circle the building looking for her husband. She never lost the love she had for him.
On a personal side, because of Covid – the Alzheimer’s Snohomish County Walk team captain asked us to have one of our residents be the “spokesperson” for the person living with the disease for the Virtual Program they were doing. Granny was that person. She was so proud of that. We did a virtual walk last year through the community - she lead the parade as it were through our community, inside and out! She wore her shirt a lot… it bonded us in a special way. I was blessed, as many of the team were over the last month or so – it was like she knew her time was short. I had two very special visits with her where she thanked me, and told me how grateful she was for the kindness we shared together. I will treasure those moments. I was not the only one she did that for… she said good bye to all of us in her way. She is really missed.
