Rev. Søren Strat Urberg, 90, of Fort Wayne, passed away to his eternal home on May 16, 2022. A fourth generation Lutheran pastor, he was born to The Rev. Konrad Morbeck Lars Urberg and Thea (Hagen) Urberg in the First Lutheran Parsonage at Blair, Wisconsin, on August 21, 1931. He was Baptized and Confirmed at First Lutheran in Blair, where his paternal grandfather and father served consecutively as senior pastors for 78 years. He attended Blair High School and did his undergraduate work at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, where he majored in history and was a member of the Nordic Choir. He received his theological training at Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota; served his ministerial internship at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison, Wisconsin; and was ordained as a pastor of The Evangelical Lutheran Church (former NCLA) at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Walum, North Dakota. After serving at Hannaford and Walum, North Dakota, he served parishes in Winnebago County, Iowa, and Waukegan, Illinois, before being called by Bethany Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, which he served from 1970 until 1996. Following his retirement from Bethany, he served in a dual parish at Hawley and Ulen, Minnesota. Thereafter, he served a congregation in the Community of Karmøy (Rogaland County), in Norway. After returning from Europe he served consecutively as a part-time staff member at Concordia Theological Seminary, as interim supply pastor in Michigan, and as visitation pastor and twice as interim pastor at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne. He served on various boards and committees during his years as a pastor, held memberships in a number of historical societies and Norwegian-American and international Norwegian organizations and published works including biblical materials. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia (Haraldson) Urberg; by three daughters, Dagny (Thompson) Brandt, of Freeport, Illinois; Ingrid Urberg (Mark Fulton), of Camrose, Alberta; and Ragna Urberg of Fort Wayne; and a son, Konrad Urberg, of Fort Wayne; and four grandchildren: Kristin and Carsten Brandt, and Kristina and Christian Urberg. He is also survived by his sister, Solveig Urberg Rogne, sister in law, Harriet Miller; and four nieces and one nephew. A Service of Christian Victory/Burial will be conducted at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1126 S. Barr Street, Fort Wayne, IN 46802 on Monday, May 23, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday May 22 at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home, 6810 Old Trail Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46809. Interment in St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Concordia Theological Seminary (Fort Wayne), Concordia Lutheran High School, St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, or to donor’s choice.
