Edward E. Doty, 86, of Grand Blanc, was greeted at heaven’s gate by the love of his life, Joan on Tuesday, September 17, 2019, in Grand Rapids. Ed was the son of Edith (Aultman) and Maj. Mark H. Doty, he was born on June 1, 1933 in Manila, Philippine Islands where his father was stationed.
A proud U.S. Army veteran, Ed served in Germany during the Korean War. After his military service he went back to school and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University (Go Green- Go White). He went on to live in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and finally came back to Michigan in 1969 where he remained for the rest of his life.
Ed worked for over 40 years with Flint Welding Supply Company, in sales and safety at a job that he truly loved. He was a former member of Peace/Lamb of God Lutheran Church in Flint, where he was active in many capacities during his decade’s long membership.
Ed loved stamp collecting, he and Joan enjoyed a garden where they grew and canned tomatoes. He grew up in an era when you fixed everything and his basement workshop reflected that he saved everything, because he could fix anything. His workshop also reflected that he invented and almost patented a couple of them. He was a tinkerer. However his greatest source of pride, was his family. As they brought so much joy, pride, love and comfort to Ed.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Joan L. Doty; son, Scott E. Doty; and son-in-law, Neal Mooers. Surviving are his children, Leslie C. Doty Mooers of Oklahoma, Lee (Rich) Doty Riedl of Grand Rapids, and Laura Doty of Boise, ID; daughter-in-law, Debra Doty of Grand Blanc; Rich’s brother, Ken Riedl who was treated as a son; grandchildren, Aaron (Kelly) Doty, Kristin (James) LaMott, Cpt. Neal Mooers, Richard (Erica) Mooers, Danielle Cline, Justin (Alisha) Riedl, and Christoph (Kathy) Riedl; great grandchildren, Zoey Ann, Dylan Riedl, Kylie Riedl, Paige Hagar and Abigail Hagar; along with many dear friends.
Ed moved over to Grand Rapids in 2018 and lived independently at Samaritas Senior Living for several months before being admitted to nursing care also at Samaritas and spent the last 14 months in the loving care of Emmanuel Hospice of Grand Rapids. If there are angels on earth it is the staff at Samaritas, The Lodge (The Bay), and Emmanuel Hospice. If words could express our love and appreciation for all these dedicated folks, it still isn’t enough. Thanks to each of you… you know who you are, so very, very much! Your love for our father and your love for us (his family) was expressed in so many, many ways.
Our loss is profound. Thank you for taking the time to read about Ed. Please feel free to sign his online guestbook and share a memory.
