Bill is survived by the love of his life, and partner in crime, Linda McCormick Mitchell and will be sadly missed by his nephews Michael, Geoff, and Mathew (Jennifer Jordan), and his nieces Kathryn (Alex Martin), Susan (Jode Spinney), his great-nephews Gavin, Griffin, Christopher and Mathew, his sister-in-law Diane Cress (David), and brother-in-law Peter McCormick (Barbara). He has gone to be with family: his parents Mamie and Keith, and grandparents Mary and William Tinsley. Bill will be missed by all, particularly his many friends at the Macassa Bay Yacht club.
Bill was a true gentleman, and exceptionally generous. He was a deep collaborator and builder. At his core, he believed every problem could be solved over a glass of red wine and a sail. He was known for his steadfast approach and kind and gentle manner. A trusted man of integrity, many found solace in his determination.
If you wanted the job done, if you wanted perseverance and extraordinary results, you called Bill. Known for his sense of humor and goodwill, he was a deeply loyal friend who loved a solid joke and was committed to attending “church” every Sunday on Nick’s boat.
Billy was a man passionate about both land and sea. He was a conductor with CN Rail for 44 years and the longest standing commodore on the Great Lakes, serving as the Commodore of Macassa Bay Yacht club for over 38 years. Working with a small group of friends, he built Macassa Bay’s club house from the ground up, driven by the vision that everyone should enjoy the water and wind. When Bill was not busy managing the day-to-day operations of the club, his generosity prevailed through overseeing the annual fundraiser for the food bank in the Hamilton area, and supporting the breast cancer group “Knot a Breast”.
Quietly tenacious and humble, Billy brought out the best in many of us.
Rest in peace Captain.
A private family funeral service will be held on Wednesday March 17, with interment at Woodland Cemetery Gardens. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date when restrictions have been lifted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Hamilton.
