Dear George,

I was so sorry to hear of Liz's passing. I first met her at the Slim Time Spa in Carlisle in the early 90s where we were in an aerobic class together.  I remember when she found her love of yoga. It transformed her, inside and out.  She lovingly tried to get me to join her. She always showed such kindness.  And how devastated she was when you were involved in that serious crash years back. Take care, George. Your angel will be watching over you from above.

Fraulein Schmalhofer was my German I and II teacher at Carlisle High School near the beginning of her career. She was a wonderful teacher, beloved by her students. I always enjoyed her classes. She was genuinely interested in all of us and looked after those who were having problems of one sort or another.  She was a real treasure.

I am very sorry for your loss. I taught with Liz for several years at Carlisle and enjoyed watching her students love her and thrive under her care. She was a devoted educator and a fun colleague. You are in my prayers.

I cannot put into words just how special Frau Dete was to all of us. She always went above and beyond, both inside and outside the classroom. Her impact was truly extraordinary.

As I’ve grown and become a teacher myself, I often find myself hoping to reflect the same passion, love of learning, wisdom, care, encouragement, and of course, FUN—that she brought to everything she did.

From the Christkindlmarkt to leaving our shoes in the hallway for Saint Nikolaus, to celebrating every single Geburtstag, Frau Dete didn’t just teach us German; she brought the language and culture to life.

I know I speak for all of my classmates when I say that her influence will never be forgotten. She’s left an indelible mark on our hearts.

George is my brother, and he was very devoted to his wife, Liz, as she was devoted to him. They loved to entertain and they loved to spread joy wherever they went. One special memory I have is when they had their 25th wedding anniversary party. Liz opened up her dress that had been sealed for 25 years. Her dear little nieces and nephews were just thrilled to see how beautiful it was and how beautiful their aunt was. 
She will be missed by so many people, and yet her sweet memories will always be in our hearts. Ellen Shank.

Liz reached out to so many people and had an amazing amount of close friends. She and her husband, George, were devoted to each other and very close. I have so many special memories. It’s hard to even choose one. I recall when she unwrapped her wedding dress at her 25th anniversary party to show all her little nieces and nephews how beautiful her dress was and how well it had been kept over 25 years. She knew how to make things fun for her students and is fondly remembered by so many of them! We will miss her! Love, Ellen and Allen Shank.

It is with great sadness that I make this entry in the obituary listing for my dear sister Liz, who passed away on Monday May 19th after a long illness. Liz was a great sister and an amazing German teacher for the Carlisle High School for many years where she shared her love for her German heritage and the German language with many students over the years. It was evident to all that Liz loved her family, being the oldest of 11 children, and loved her German heritage as well. It was also over her last months that she also shared more of her faith as well, always glad to hear Bible passages and asking for prayer. I am grateful for my dear sister Liz and am comforted that she is now with the Lord in Heaven with our other loved ones.  I encourage you to cherish your loved ones and be quick to give many hugs.

Mrs./Frau Dete was easily my favorite teacher while in attendance at Carlisle High School. Her commitment to her students and flair for the German language and culture still resonate with me, as I’m sure it does with anyone who had the pleasure of attending her German classes. She was easily beloved by all of her students.  She always had a graceful and light-hearted way about her even with a classroom full of idiot teenagers that probably tested her to her limits on a daily basis. I often think about her actually and all the fun we had in her classes, especially come gingerbread house building time. She was the best! I have a trip planned to Austria in August and can’t wait to make her proud!

My older sister Liz was born at Saint Joseph Hospital in Lancaster, the 1st of eleven siblings born there.  She was baptized at Saint Joseph Catholic Church on the "Hill", started kindergarten there before transferring to Saint Anne Catholic Church and School where she made her First Holy Communion.  
She then began her and our family's long faith journey at Historic Saint Mary's Catholic Church where she attended the parochial school, was confirmed and later married George there.  She attended Lancaster Catholic High School, as did our Mom, Elizabeth Louise, and her siblings.
We were blessed that she was the Godmother for our son Stephen's Baptism at Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church.
Sadly Saint Mary's also held the funeral Masses for our Mother and Father.
May she rest in the peace of Our Lord.
