Born in Chambersburg, PA to Roy E. and Leila (Grimm) Frushour on May 17, 1934, she attended Chambersburg High School, followed by Shippensburg State Teachers College and Penn State University where she earned a Master’s in Education. She was a homemaker, teacher, entrepreneur, and volunteer. Gladys kept a warm, open house for her family, relatives, and extensive friend and neighbor groups. She taught for 5 years as a fulltime teacher, then, after starting a family, substitute taught throughout northern York county for 24 years. An avid gardener, she maintained an extensive series of plots for home use and sale. For over 30 years she managed a business selling fresh produce to restaurants, grocery stores, and individuals. Together with Tucker, her husband of 65 years, she dedicated her later life to volunteering. Together they helped various organizations thrive, notably the Northern Nut Growers Association, the Pennsylvania Nut Growers Association, and the Center for Independent Living of Central Pennsylvania (CILCP). After 25 plus years, the CILCP named Tucker and Gladys the “Father and Mother” of the CILCP. Throughout her life she was a staunch mother, wife, daughter, and friend.
Surviving are her husband Edwin Tucker Hill, two sons, David (Kathleen O’Hanlon) Hill and Stephen (Agnes Brugger) Hill, and two grandchildren, Maximillian Hill and Anna Hill. Gladys is survived by a sister-in-law, Doris Kay Black and two nephews, Rodney (Janice) Black and Nathaniel (Heather) Black. In addition to her parents, Gladys was predeceased by a brother, Harold Frushour.
A memorial celebration will be planned at a later date. Donations in honor of Gladys V. Hill should be sent to the Center for Independent Living of Central Pennsylvania (https://cilcp.org/). The family wishes to thank her wonderful caregiver, Elizabeth Wopea.
