She was born April 28, 1924, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Luther and Frances Bell Payne.
She lived most of her life in the Harrisonburg area and attended Rockingham County Schools. She formerly attended Mill Creek Church of the Brethren.
In 1963, she married Paul Varner, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by a sister, Pauline Smith of Harrisonburg, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
A graveside service will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, at Mount Clinton Mennonite Church Cemetery with the Rev. Clarence Moyers officiating.
