George Lemuel Jackson hastily came into this world on his own terms, on July 27, 1956, in Houston, Texas to proud parents Rev. George Oliver Jackson and Mrs. Ollie Mae Jackson. Patience wasn’t his virtue. At a young age, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond, Texas where his grandfather, Rev. Lemuel H. Davis, served as pastor.
George sang the message of the gospel through song with several of his first cousins, contributing to the group by teaching them to sing “Two Wings”, his favorite song. Rev. George L. Jackson was called into ministry in 1972, at the age of 17. He preached his first sermon at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Brookshire, Texas. Soon afterward he graduated from Waltrip Senior High School then later met and married Linda Davis in 1977. To this union 3 children, Earnest Jackson, Eureka Jackson, and Erin Jackson were born.
Relocating to Houston, George served as the Youth Pastor at North Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Cleveland, TX. There, he built a Christian youth outreach program. His program drew many young people within the community to attend North Mt. Olive and demonstrate their love for Christ through service in the youth choir, youth usher board, and drill team.
Rev. Jackson moved his membership to the family church, Greater Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Houston, under the leadership of Rev. Derrick Joseph. He served as the associate minister.
He briefly pastored Berea Missionary Baptist Church.
George was coined as the “little country preacher” with a big message. Anytime he was asked to deliver the Word of God, he didn’t hesitate in telling us “what thus saith the Lord.” He often talked about going to “that place where it would always be “Howdy, Howdy and never Good-bye.” Rev. Jackson would leave you thinking about that Great Day, and wanting to hear more about the “Good News of the Gospel.”
Many times in his daily ministry, he would befriend people in need and network to find a way to provide exactly what they were in need of. His humorous, quick-witted spirit was so engaging, you were drawn in by his smile. He served in many capacities and found no limits in passionately caring for his mother and aunt until his health failed him.
Rev. Jackson is preceded in death by grandmothers, Mrs. Zara Davis and Mrs. Alice Jackson; grandfathers, Rev. Lemuel H. Davis and Rev. George Jackson, Sr. and sister, Arletta Jackson.
His memory will be cherished by his mother, Ollie M. Jackson; aunt, Rosetta J. Davis; children, Earnest Jackson, Eureka Jackson and Erin Jackson; sisters, Shirley Richards, Auretta Smith, Cheryl Jordan (Otis); brother, Chadwick Jackson (Doretha); grandsons, Dy’Lyn Stamps, Jr., Torian Wilkins, Jr., and Jaiden Wilkins and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
