October 24, 1941 – May 8, 2020
Antonio de Campos Rendeiro, affectionately known as “Vovo”, to his family, passed away peacefully in New Port Richey, FL with his wife and daughter by his side on May 8, 2020. He was 78 years old. Loving and dedicated husband of 49 years to Christine Elizabeth Wood Rendeiro; proud and loving father of Michael and Marisa; cherished grandfather and “Vovo” of Ruby, Mia and Alessandra.
Born on October 24, 1941 in Murtosa, Portugal, he was the eldest son of the late Antonio Augustos Rendeiro and the late Maria Acencao Pinho Rendeiro. He arrived in New York through the Brooklyn Navy Yard with his parents in 1946 and grew up in Mineola, Long Island, New York.
Tony, as his friends called him, was beloved and revered by all who knew him. He earned his BA in Political Science from Boston College in 1963 and enlisted in the U.S. Army soon thereafter, serving his country at a time when most wouldn’t – as Captain, Armored Reconnaissance Unit (1964-1969) – and doing so with pride and zest. Never asking for anything in return.
On May 17, 1971, Tony married the love of his life Christine Elizabeth Wood Rendeiro of Toronto, Canada, a professional figure skater who performed worldwide with the Ice Capades Inc. Together they had two children: Michael, born May 30, 1975 in Toronto, Canada and Marisa, born March 19, 1980 in Greenwich, CT.
Tony was a successful executive and international banker who held many jobs over his lifetime, including an impressive 18 years at Xerox Corporation, where, as Vice President of Training & Development, he personally led the growth and expansion of the company into Canada, South America, Egypt and the Caribbean, as well as domestically across the United States. A dedicated leader and mentor in his field, he helmed several executive positions at Credit Suisse First Boston in New York, NY; Nations Bank (now Bank of America) in Charlotte, NC; PaineWebber in Hackensack, NJ; and Merrill Lynch in New York, NY. He was also partner and co-owner of an entrepreneurial venture specializing in health and wellness in Mazatlán, Mexico.
Tony believed in living life to the fullest. He was the life of the party and made friends everywhere he went. Bringing his entrepreneurial spirit, sharp tongue and dry wit to every conversation. Fluent in three languages, Tony traveled and saw the world – from Canada to South America, Africa to Asia, Europe to Australia – mostly with his wife and always with his family at heart. An avid athlete who played and coached soccer and hockey, Tony was also an accomplished marathon runner. He was a huge proponent for youth sports, especially women’s soccer. He was a National Committee Member, Clinician Coach and Referee for the American Youth Soccer Organization and played an instrumental role in the establishment of the Youth Hockey Club in Greenwich, CT in the 1980s and 1990s. Tony was a true renaissance man and spent his free time mastering The New York Times’ crossword puzzles every day of the week – especially on Sundays – and sharing his love of dance and music with The Beatles on repeat, surrounded by his family.
Despite these many accomplishments and recognitions, Tony was a family man first and foremost and was most proud of his roles as husband, father and grandfather. He will be remembered as an amazing patriarch who provided for all and always had a gleam in his eye when his kids were around. He is survived by his wife Christine Elizabeth Wood Rendeiro of Hudson, FL, two children and three grandchildren. His children include son Michael Anthony Rendeiro and his wife Katie Fontana Rendeiro of New York, NY, and daughter Marisa Rendeiro Poe and her husband John Thomas Hobby Poe of Raleigh, NC; and his grandchildren include Ruby Alena Wood Poe and Maria Elizabeth Cora Poe of Raleigh, NC and Alessandra Queen Rendeiro of New York, NY. Also survived by his brother Kenneth Ernest Augustos Rendeiro of Mt. Sinai, NY, and his sister Cynthia Gloria Rendeiro-Lontrao of Lutz, FL.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Tony Rendeiro’s name to HPH Hospice, 6807 Rowan Rd, New Port Richey, FL 34653 or online at https://lifepathhospice.chaptershealth.org/HPHGeneralDonation [designation: Marliere Care Center].
A private family memorial will be scheduled at a later date.
