

Marion Louise (Strader) Matthews, died peacefully Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at the Hospice House of Citrus County in Lecanto, Florida at age 91 in the culmination of several years of declining health. She had been residing at Highland Place in Inverness, Florida for the past few months, and was previously a long-time resident of Beverly Hills, Florida and New Hampton, New Hampshire.
She was born January 23, 1927 in Oxford, MA to Lorne Bertram Strader and Ellen Lillian (Keith). She graduated in 1944 as class salutatorian from Oxford High School then trained as a cadet nurse during World War II, graduating in 1947 from Hahnemann Hospital in Worcester, MA. She married Charles Dixon Matthews in 1948, now deceased and had three children.
She is survived by two daughters, Marcia Matthews (Bruce) Hamel of New Hampton, NH and Margaret Ellen Matthews of Hartford, Maine, her sister, Hazel Prouty, brother, Donald Strader, both of Oxford, seven grandchildren, Andrea, Keith, Cora, Tessa, Ellis, Heather and Marc and three great grandchildren, Lilliana, Wyatt and Juliana. She was predeceased by her parents and her son, Bruce John Matthews.
She spent many years in nursing both in Massachusetts and in Florida and was a 70+ year member of the Clara Barton Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. During retirement she took almost 100 cruises, mostly in the Caribbean. As per her wishes, her ashes will be spread at sea.
In lieu of a memorial service, close family will gather to commemorate her life at a later date.
