Our beloved Katherine “Katie” Schura, 27 passed away from natural causes this past July 19, 2019 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born June 25, 1992, to Elizebeth (Liz) and Michael (Mike) Schura in Renton, Washington. Katie and her family moved to Robins, Iowa in 1995, where she and her older brother Kyle grew up. Katie attended John F. Kennedy High School, graduating in 2011. She earned a Bachelor Degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Leisure, Youth and Human Services in 2015 and a Masters Degree in 2017 from the University of Indianapolis in Sports Management.
After internships with the 500 Festival and Indiana Sports Corp, she became a successful Account Manager with AXS in 2017, providing ticketing services to the NCAA in downtown Indianapolis. Through that role she was engaged in a number of NCAA sports championships – an up close and personal role that she enjoyed -- allowing her to see events and stadiums across the USA. A life-long Colts fan and recent season ticket holder, she landed her dream job as Assistant Ticketing Manager at Lucas Oil Stadium in early 2019.
Katie’s passion for life and the pursuit of happiness led her to enjoy helping people and serving others. People simply gravitated towards her warm disposition, and she made friends easily. As a child, she was active in volleyball as a player and coach, enjoyed NCYC events, and fundraised for charities such as Breast Cancer Awareness.
While attending the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), she grew to be a passionate and active leader in her sorority, Alpha Phi, as well as was elected to be the President of the Panhellenic Council her senior year. At UNI she was affectionately known as “Momma Schura”. Katie remained loyal to the Alpha Phi Epsilon Theta chapter for the rest of her life as part of the local Alumnae chapter.
She is survived by her parents, Michael Martin and Elizebeth Ann (Scheeffer) Schura, her brother Kyle Robert Schura(Robins, IA), the love of her life and soul mate, Travis Chalmers (along with their beloved dog, Abram) and her dear grandmother Barbara Kay Schura (all from Indianapolis). She loved being with her Aunts, Uncles and hanging with her many cousins. Katie had wonderful friends all across the country. She was preceded by her paternal grandfather Mike Schura Jr, and her maternal grandparents Robert E. (Bob) and Janet E. Scheeffer.
The visitation was held on Thursday July 25, 2019, from 4pm to 8pm at Little & Sons (4901 E Stop 11 Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46237), with a funeral mass the following day at 10:00 am on Friday the 26th at St. Jude Catholic Church (5353 McFarland Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46227). A burial service and mercy meal immediately followed.
