Nancy Morrison, a resident of Kenora, Ontario passed away peacefully in her sleep with her cane by her side at her residence on Sunday, March 31, 2019. Nancy lived each day with purpose, ceremony and commitment to the Creator.
She joins her beloved husband Victor, her mother and father, son Larry, daughter Shirley and brothers Norbert, Tobasonakwut, Edwin and John Pete.
She is lovingly remembered by her brother Elder Fred Kelly, daughter Patty Morrison (Phil), sons Don Morrison and William Kelly. Her grandchildren Catherine, Leroy (Devon), Crystal and Megan Cadieux (Joshua), Jennifer Land (Peter), Joseph and Kayleigh Morrison. As well as her great grandchildren Braydan, Ethan, Alexis, Leo, Lincoln and Halle. She will also be greatly missed by numerous friends, family and community members whose love and friendship have enriched her life.
Nancy was a survivor of St. Mary’s Residential School, was past President of the Ontario Native Women’s Association, a member of the Nishoomis Nokomis Group helping other residential school survivors, and had received the Ontario Senior Achievement Award for significant contributions to her community. Nancy was honoured to conduct the traditional water ceremony. She was a strong advocate for people battling homelessness, addictions and advocated reconciliation and healing. She also co-founded the “I’ll Help You” program and fought fiercely against the victimization of aboriginal women and for environmental preservation. She was an author and wrote her own book, “Approaching Dawn”. She also enjoyed picking blueberries and traditional medicines and lived her entire life in the Lake of the Woods area. She was incredibly proud of her family and never passed an opportunity to be with them, any reason to get together was a good one!
We would like to extend special thanks to the Ontario Provincial Police and her friends at Parkview Apartments for their care and compassion.
