Mr. Ben On March 23, 2012 Bennie Copeland went to sleep and God said, "come with me." Bennie was born on March 24, 1925 in Homer, Louisiana to Carl and Nora Sumlin Copeland. He attended public schools until the age of twelve and then made his way into the work world to provide for his family. Bennie worked in several states: Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Oklahoma as a day laborer. In Galveston County he worked at Todd Shipyard, Marathon, Amoco and Brown & Root. He also worked at the Galveston County Courthouse in environmental services. Bennie married Corine Marie Freeman on May 9, 1953. To this union three daughters were born: Nelda Elizabeth and twins, Bennetta Gaye and Corretta Faye all of Hitchcock. After his marriage to Corine, he was baptized and became a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Galveston under the leadership of the late Rev. T. J. Anderson. In 1965, the family moved to Hitchcock where he resided until his sunset. He was an active citizen within the public schools alongside his wife. He supported the football, basketball and Swingarette Booster Clubs. This is where he was often jokingly referred to as the "1st" Black Mayor of Hitchcock". He supported his nephew, Albert Tyrone Copeland all four years while attending Ball High School as a running back for the Tors. Ben was a "BIG FAN" of the Dallas Cowboys. He is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years; his parents; grandparents, Gus and Katie Copeland; brothers, Nobie Lee, Joseph Louis and Albert Lee; sisters, Nelda Lee and Lois; and a host of nieces and nephews. Memories of Mr. Ben will be cherished by his daughters, Nelda, Bennetta and Corretta; grandson, Landon Keith; granddaughters, Lauren Elizabeth, Erica Annette, Erin Marie and Erianna Janae'; two great-granddaughters, Carrington Rae and Aubree Jaelynn; sisters-in-law, Shirley Copeland and Lorraine Gary; and a generation of nieces and nephews to celebrate the life he lived.
