He attended Presley Country School and later when the family moved into Campbell he attended Campbell Public School and graduated in 1949 from Campbell High School. After graduating he was drafted into the U.S Army where he served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged February 19, 1960. Medals he earned while in service were: Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, Combat Infantry Badge, United Nations Service Medal, National defense Service Medal.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Trinity Lutheran Church, Lincoln, NE.
In November of 1993 he had a heart transplant at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, NE. He was heart recipient number 60. It was from a very healthy, happy athletic young man and was a perfect match for Melvin’s body.
On March 25, 2014 Melvin had the honor to go on the Korean War Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. of which he enjoyed.
He was a member or Willie Fierstein Post 169 at Campbell where on May 25, 2015 he was honored for being a 60 year member.
He was employed with Cushman Motor in Lincoln for 26 years as an expeditor and retired in 1990. He was a part time employee of Lincoln Public School Custodial Department and Wagner’s IGA .
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Gladys of 57 years; six children, Sherri (John) Dahlgren, Randy (Lori), Rick, Sandi Deubelbeiss, Scott and Kandi; grandchildren, Krystal Davis, Lee Dahlgren, Jeremiah Deubelbeiss, Karla Markwardt, Sarah Dahlgren and Caitlin Markwardt; three great grandchildren, Emma Dahlgren, Jarvis Lott and Colby Dahlgren; his sister, Azule (Allan) Hupf; sisters-in- law, Charlotte Markwardt and Wyona Markwardt; aunt, Gerry Rasser; numerous nieces and nephews and his special “poochie” Peanut.
Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Robert, Jack and Frannie; sister, Beverly Rutt; brother in law, Dell Rutt and son-in-law, Larry Deubelbeiss. Memorials suggested to the family for later designation.
Services will be held Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home with viewing Tuesday, November 13, 2018 from 10 a.m. – 8 pm. with family present 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Private family burial will be in the National Cemetery at Omaha, NE.
