Dorothea M. (McKenna) McDermott, age 99, a lifelong resident of Lynn died Tuesday, January 16, 2013 at Duxbury House Nursing Home in Duxbury, MA. She was the beloved wife of the late Hugh Francis McDermott. Born in Lynn on October 20, 1913, Dorothea was the daughter of the late Francis and Margaret (Fraher) McKenna.
Dorothea operated her own hairdressing business for over fifty years on Chatham Street in Lynn. She loved to sew, bowl, play bingo and solitaire. She also enjoyed music, dancing, telling jokes and a good laugh. Dot was very giving of herself and generous of her time taking care of many seriously ill friends and family members. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and then, Holy Family Church.
Our mother was devoted to her children; she protected and loved us. Dot as she was most often called or Narnie the name she coined when she became a grandmother.
She is survived by her four children, William McDermott and his wife Jo-Ann of Fairfield, CT, Sheila Aylesbury and her husband Tom of Marblehead, Ellen Elson of Plainville and Maura Zaval and her husband Ken of Pembroke. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister Margaret, and brothers Walter, Ernest, Joseph, Arthur, and Francis. She will be greatly missed by
all of us.
Dorothea’s Funeral will be held from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn on Friday at 10AM. Funeral Mass in Holy Family Church, 26 Bessom Street, Lynn at 11AM. Burial to follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Lynn. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting Hours Thursday from 4-8PM.
