Roberta Sue Congrave

“I was silly and proud of it. Thank God I married a man with a fair amount of silly still, too.”

The above words were written by Roberta Sue Congrave on January 10, 2021 to begin her obituary. She wanted to write her own obituary, so she was sure to convey that she did not want a sad and maudlin service, but rather she wanted her family and friends to gather to “Celebrate the Life of Roberta Sue Congrave.” She wanted people to get together and tell the happy, “silly”, loving, and funny experiences and stories they shared with her. She had a way of telling her own stories (good and bad) in a way that always entertained. Listeners would laugh till they cried, and often asked for more!!!

We lost our wonderful wife, sister, aunt, friend on February 3, 2021. Roberta wanted it known that she had a wonderful and happy life despite many setbacks.

Roberta was born @ 11:48 PM on November 21, 1958 – 12 minutes left in the sign of Scorpio. She always saw herself as a true Scorpion. She could sting like crazy and run to the darkest corner, but she would acknowledge that Scorpion tendency and come back to make amends if she hurt you. Everyone she knew would say how smart, sweet, caring, kind, funny, generous, loving, relatable and lovable she was.

Roberta is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 33 years, Curtis S. Congrave. She was the youngest daughter of Roy Leslie and Dorothy Roberta Woods. She is also survived by her sisters, Leslie Myers and Shirley Keith; her brother, Roger Woods; her nieces Rayona Norwood and Lisa Hood; great nieces Kelsey Hood, Tayler Hood, and Jessy Morris; great nephews Casey Keith and Cody Randolfph; mother-in-law Joyce Cahill; brothers-in-law Marc and Alden Congrave; and last, but not least, her loveable and constant companion, Oliver (Ollie). She loved and cherished them all. Because of her playful and childlike spirit, she was especially fun for all the little ones.

Roberta was a lifetime dog “Mama” and loved those little guys and girls as if they were her children. We ask that in lieu of flowers, you donate in her name to the Arizona Humane Society or your favorite animal shelter.

There will be a “Celebration of Life” for Roberta at the Red Mountain Park in Mesa, AZ (Roadrunner Ramada) on May 2, 2021 at 10:00 AM. Address and map of park is available at https://www.mesaparks.com/parks-facilities/parks/red-mountain-park. Roberta was originally from Albuquerque, NM. While living in Albuquerque, some of her favorite times were gatherings in the nearby mountains or parks for breakfast outdoors with friends and family. Once she moved to Arizona, the Red Mountain Park was the site of those breakfasts. She was a storyteller extraordinaire, so please bring your Roberta stories to share and celebrate.
