Courageously, with family members both by his side and deep within his heart, Dr. Byung Chan
(“BC”) Eu passed away on August 25th, 2023 at the age of 88 while in hospital. Born July 7th, 1935
in Seoul, Korea, Byung Chan was a remarkable man who will be deeply missed by all who knew
him. He leaves behind his ever-devoted and loving wife, Hui Young (née Kim), his two children
David (Angela) and Cathy (Richard), his five grandchildren, Matthew, Megan, Justin, Jacqueline
and Jason, brothers Byung Hun, Byung Wook and sister Young Ok and their respective families.
A gifted scholar and profound intellectual, Byung Chan pursued his academic studies as he did
everything – with great intention, drive, discipline, dedication, commitment and quiet passion.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the prestigious Seoul National University in
1959, he left Korea to pursue his graduate studies in Physical Chemistry at Brown University,
earning a PhD in 1965, and completed a fellowship in Chemistry at Harvard University in 1967.
From 1967 until 2001 when he was appointed emeritus status, Byung Chan was a professor at
McGill University with the Faculty of Chemistry. Throughout his tenure at McGill and then later
as professor emeritus, he dedicated his life to research in the areas of molecular scattering theory,
non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, fluid dynamics and irreversible thermodynamics, leaving
behind an impressive array of authored and co-authored research articles and monographs.
On July 7th, 2022, his 87th birthday, he had the honour of presenting a plenary lecture at the
32nd International Symposium on Rarefied Gas Dynamics in Seoul, Korea. The journey that had
started 60 years earlier had come full circle with the presentation of his life’s scientific
contributions in his beloved motherland.
To the memory of the days of youth
Of lavender dreams
The dreamy soft light …
In the sun-woven shade of the lilac
On the old campus in Seoul.
- Byung Chan Eu, 2001
