Marguerite Hawkinson, 87, passed away March 28, 2017. Loving wife of the late Arthur Hawkinson. She is survived by her sisters: Mary Ann Hill and Georgene Olsen and their families; her children: Carole Irwin and Bruce (Carol) Hawkinson; her grandchildren: Crystal Irwin-Debraux (Marqus Harris), Erin (Justin) Feinberg and Eric (Kallen) Hawkinson; her great-grandchildren: Alyssa and Imara Irwin-Debraux; her loving caregiver: Aurea Hernandez and family; many other caregivers, local EMT services, Elite and V-Care Hospice Services, and her friends from the Bartlett Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Marguerite was an amazing daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma and aunt. She had many wonderful talents, beginning with singing with her sisters on WMBI when she was a child. She had many creative abilities: painting, wood carving, knitting, sewing and needlepoint. Marguerite loved Jesus her whole life and fervently prayed for God’s grace on her family and friends. She had a caring, giving nature, helping others when she could. She had a career as Activity Director for Northbrook Nursing Home. This gave her an outlet for her creative abilities with many residents. Marguerite was nicknamed Grandma Perky by her son’s children because of her effervescence; even scooting along on a scooter with grandkids, nephews and niece. She had no fear! Marguerite could stretch a dollar like nobody else. Her family never went hungry because she was a wiz in the kitchen: breads, cookies, cakes, pies, casseroles, roasts, etc. Like the Pied Piper, she rounded up kids from the neighborhood, taking them: swimming at the Palladium, to museums, the zoo, concerts in Grant Park or local venues. Because her husband Arthur was a Naval Officer, Marguerite was able to take her family to the theater or bowling alley at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. Her beloved husband served honorably in the Navy, from enlisted man, working up the rank as a maverick, eventually being promoted to Captain, acting as Inspector General for the Atlantic Fleet. His naval career took Arthur and Marguerite to Hawaii, England and a few other far-flung places. Marguerite’s heart was always at home with those she loved and adored. She had a soft spot for stray dogs, cats, rabbits and people. Marguerite praised God for any opportunity to serve Him. She always had a Christ-like servant’s heart. She is loved, she is missed and we look forward to Jesus’ promise of the resurrection hope, found in John 5:28, 29. Services will be announced at a later date.
