

Ret. Salem Police Department, Sergeant Richard Howell, 75, passed away surrounded by family on February 21st. He was the beloved husband of Evelyn (Levesque) Howell. Dick honorably served his country in the United States Army as a Helicopter Mechanic and also served in the U.S. Navy, stationed for a time in Key West. Following his military service he was appointed to the Fall River Police Dept. where he served for 2 years. He then transferred to the Salem Police Dept. where he retired as a Sergeant in June, 2003 with 32 years of service. He continued to work for 8 more years with the Essex County Sheriff’s Dept. Mr. Howell was a lifelong resident of Salem before fully retiring to North Fort Myers, Florida with his wife. He enjoyed boating, watching sports, traveling and living on the water. He was also an active member of many local organizations including the VFW, AOH, Knights of Columbus, AMVETS and more. Surviving him in addition to his wife are 5 sons; Thomas, Richard and Todd Howell, all of Salem, Jeffrey Howell and his wife Jennifer of NH, John Howell and his wife Gabriela of AZ; 9 grandchildren; 4 stepchildren; Pam Ryan and her husband Jerry of Salem, Mark Lovely and his wife Courtney of NH, Chris Lovely and his wife Amy of Reading, Salinas Zarling of Idaho and 9 step grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Chester Humphrey and his wife Margaret of FL and their children. He was pre-deceased by his step granddaughter Kyley. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
