

Professor Emeritus A. James Gregor of the University of California, Berkeley, 90, died August 30, 2019, with his wife by his side after receiving the sacrament of the Last Rites at Kaiser Hospital, Redwood City, California.
Born on April 2, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York, to Antonio and Mary Gimigliano, Professor Gregor received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Columbia University, and taught political science at U. C. Berkeley for more than 40 years.
A former Adjunct Professor at the Command and Staff College of the Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia, Dr. Gregor was a prolific author of some 32 books published by such prestigious academic presses as Cambridge, Princeton, Stanford, University of California, and Yale University Presses; 13 monographs; and more than 100 journal articles. His writings spanned a range of subjects that include Italian Fascism, Marxism, U.S. foreign policy, China, political religions and epistemology.
An internationally recognized authority on Italian Fascism, Professor Gregor was made Knight in the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2004. His other academic honors included Oppenheimer Professor of Strategy, Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia (1996-1997); Political History Prize, Italia tra le guerre (1983); Senior Fellow, Institute for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences, Hebrew University, Jerusalem (1980-81); and Guggenheim Fellow in 1974.
Dr. Gregor was preceded in death by his four sisters. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Professor Maria Hsia Chang.
