1964 – 2019
We are saddened to announce that our dear Helen passed away peacefully in her sleep early Tuesday morning, March 10. Predeceased by her mother, Pamela Fitch, she is lovingly remembered by her father Frank Fitch (Mary); sister Christina Bradshaw; brothers Michael (Heather), Tom (Shannon) and Patrick (Michelle); adored nieces Robyn, Vanessa, and Sloan; and her many close friends around the world.
She was born in Ottawa and raised in Halifax and Ottawa. Trained as a lawyer, she made constitutional law her passport to fascinating places: Pohnpei and Palau in the Pacific, and Tanzania and Kenya in Africa. A passionate traveller, she didn’t just tour Israel, she worked on a kibbutz, she didn’t just pass through Denmark, she milked cows on a farm, she didn’t just visit Spain, she walked the Camino – twice. Most especially, she adored Africa and Africans, having taught in Lesotho, studied law in Capetown, pursued music in Mali and experienced history in Ethiopia, as well as working in Tanzania and Kenya,
On returning to Canada, she reconnected with friends and family. The highlight of her summers was volunteering at the Jazz and Blues Festivals, but she loved quiet evenings with friends. As her strength ebbed away, her life centered on the wonderful friends who sustained her and the beautiful nieces who energized her. The family will receive friends at Racine Robert & Gauthier Funeral Home, 180 Montreal Road (between Cyr and Savard Streets) on Monday March 18, 2019 after 1:30 pm, followed by a Funeral Service at 3:30 pm in the Chapel. She passed away as she would have wanted, quietly, at home, in her sleep. We are forever grateful to the kind and generous staff at the Cancer Centre at the General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation, specifying the Cancer Centre, would be appreciated. We will never forget her radiant smile or her big heart.
