John Gail Borden Smith, age 74, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 02, 2019, after a long and courageous battle with Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD) – a rare progressive and debilitating neurological disorder.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jon A. Smith; Twin Daughters: Anita Ervin & Beth Metevier; Son and Daughter-in-law: John Clark “Buddy” & Jeanne Smith, and six grandchildren: Tyler, Haley, Elise, Cassie, Rachel and Ryan. He is also survived by his Aunt Priscilla Reeder and Brothers: Roy, Reuben, Phillip and Robbin Smith.
John was preceded in death by his Parents: Reverend Gail B. & Alice Smith; and his Brother: David Smith.
For almost 40 years, John worked for the Atlantic Coastline Railroad (ACL), Seaboard Coastline RR (SCL) and finally the CSX Railroad. John was an active member and attended many railroad retirement functions.
John & Jon (wife) have been long time members of Westview Baptist Church, Sanford, FL. John served as a Deacon; and also volunteered to help his wife as Sunday School Director. John was a very faithful man and if he said he would be there to help you – he would be there! John was a Christian since youth, and believed very strongly in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, through witnessing and helping others. His favorite Bible verse is Romans 10:9-10:
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
A celebration of life service will be held at Westview Baptist Church, 4100 H.E. Thomas Jr. Parkway, Sanford, Florida 32771, on Saturday, June 29, 2019. There will be no graveside service.
