born during Second World War in Poland, in the small village near the city of Krakow.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Emil and Maria Bernacik, and his sister, Maria
Morkisz-Wiskont. Andrzej completed his Master of Science in Mechanical/Electrical
Engineering degree at the Silesian Polytechnic Institute in Gliwice, Poland. In 1982, he
emigrated as a political refugee to the United States and three years later was reunited
there with his family. Andrzej embraced the American way of life; he was proud to
became an American Citizen. After obtaining his Professional Engineering license, he
joined the federal civil service and worked in Washington, D.C., in the White House.
Later on, in the State of New Mexico, he was a supervisory engineer for the Indian
Health Service. Andrzej was a devoted family man. He was a loving husband, the best
father to his two daughters and a proud grandpa “dziadzia” to his granddaughter. He
enjoyed hiking, walking and sightseeing. He traveled with his wife to many exotic places
around the world. He also was an avid non-fiction book reader, loved classical music
and enjoyed watching history and discovery channels. All his life, he loved animals and
rescued and helped to find homes for many abandoned dogs and cats. After retiring
from civil service, he moved with his wife first to Columbia, Missouri, and in 2017 to
Pelham, Alabama to be close to his daughter and her family. Andrzej really enjoyed his
last years in Alabama. He loved southern food and was happy to attend mass at the
Cathedral of Saint Paul in Birmingham. He is survived and forever will be missed and
remembered by his loving wife of 51 years, Barbara Cywinska-Bernacik; his two
daughters, Eva Helena Williams (Cory), and Joanna Maria Gunasti (John); and his
precious granddaughter Olivia Kate Gunasti. A private memorial mass will be held at the
Cathedral of Saint Paul in the near future. At a later date, there will be a gravesite
service for the family and friends in his honor. The family would like to express
appreciation to the Comfort Care Hospice staff for their assistance during Andrzej’s
illness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to local
animal shelters.
