Darla Mae Huber was born May 23, 1947, to William O. and Melitta Huber of rural Freeman, South Dakota. She grew up on the family farm with her four older brothers and younger sister. She was an active little girl and enjoyed being outside, keeping up with her brothers and riding her Shetland pony, Polly, or her horse, Torky.
Darla was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at Clayton. Throughout her life, she often commented about her bedtime prayer list of people and concerns.
She completed elementary school at Kapsch #48 near Clayton. In 1965, she graduated from Emery High School, where she was a cheerleader and homecoming queen. She then attended Northern State College in Aberdeen before embarking on her business career in Minneapolis, Omaha and finally Phoenix, where she lived for many years.
She married Alan D. Sorenson in 1970, and they divorced in 1981. In Arizona, her longtime companion was Ed Short of Flagstaff until his passing in 2007.
Darla was known for her independence, sharp sense of humor and contagious laughter. After retiring, she was very active in her homeowners’ association and would lend a helping hand to her neighbors however she could. In her later years, she became a doting cat mom.
Darla is survived by her brothers Darrel (Susan) Huber of Sioux Falls, Dennis Huber of Freeman and Donald (Diane) Huber of Rapid City; her sister Debby (Kirby) Shroll of Sioux Falls; nieces and nephews; and many friends including Joan Delaney of Phoenix and Debbie Allen of Flagstaff. She was preceded by her parents; her brother William Dale Huber; her infant sister Carol Huber; her sister-in-law Linda Huber; and her companion Ed Short.
