The Very Rev. Father George Arseniu passed away Thursday night March 8, 2018. Born in 1924 of immigrant parents, Father served his country in WWII in the Navy on LST 706 in the South Pacific Theater. After earning three Battle Stars in the war he returned home and studied at the Holy Cross Seminary in Brookline, MA. Pursuing his passion from a child, Father became a Greek Orthodox Priest for sixty years. He served communities in Waterloo, Iowa in 1953, then the community in Albuquerque, NM. While he was in New Mexico, Father was instrumental in having the New Mexico Legislature acknowledge that the Eastern Orthodox Religion as a major faith in the state through “House Joint Memorial No. 2” , in the NM Senate. He was then transferred to Holy Trinity in Raleigh, NC.
Father then served the community of Lynchburg, VA while still working for the State of North Carolina.
He was very proud to serve the NC Dept. of Corrections as an Inmate Grievance Investigator and finally as Chaplin for the prison system. He was a husband, father, friend, pilot, spiritual advisor and a Man of God. He will be missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death his two sisters, Eva and Kaye.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Arseniu; his two children, Joanne of Durham, and Billy and his wife, Jo Lynn, and their son, Matthew Geisz, all of Raleigh; his brother, Christ Arseniu of Altoona, PA; a nephew, Jason Arseniu and a niece, Karen Pappas, both of Pennsylvania.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 6-8pm with a Trisagion Prayer Service beginning at 7pm, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 5000 Lead Mine Rd. Raleigh, NC 27612.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 11am at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Burial with military honors will follow the service at Raleigh Memorial Park.
