On March 17, 2018, Syril Gordon Portnoy died at the age of 95. She was born September 27, 1922, in Jackson, Mississippi. She is preceded in death by her parents, Fannye and David Gordon, her two sisters Beverly Gordon Daniel and Leah Grossman Kantor, and her husband Louis Israel Portnoy. They met when he was stationed in Jackson during World War II and were married on April 4, 1944.
Mrs. Portnoy was business associate/owner of The Vogue in Jackson where she played an integral role in its success. The Gordon family founded it in 1919 as Gordon’s and it continued in downtown Jackson until 1969. Mrs. Portnoy was a member of Beth Israel Congregation where she was President of the Jackson Chapter of Hadassah as well as Regional Treasurer of the organization.
Mrs. Portnoy adored her family, each one an enormous blessing. She also relished the company of friends-on the golf course, around the bridge table and dinner table, dropping by to visit, and just sharing great chocolate.
There will be a graveside service at Beth Israel Cemetery on Thursday March 22, 2018 at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the DGLD Foundation at dgldfoundation.org. This foundation was established in loving memory of Mrs. Portnoy’s great nephew, David Gordon Louis Daniel.
