A memorial service with military honors will be held at 4:00pm, Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service Chapel in Southport.
Zak was born on July 9, 1943 in Mount Holly, N.J. He graduated high school in 1961 and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965. He attended Officer Candidate School in 1967 and graduated from the University of Tampa in 1973 with a BS in Business Management. During his distinguished 28 year career, Colonel Zakszeski’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Legion of Merit and the Transportation Corps St. Christopher Award. While in the Army, Col Zak was the Commander of the 440th Transportation Company at Can Tho, Vietnam, Port Battalion Commander of San Pedro, CA, attended and graduated from the Army War College in Carlisle, PA, and finished his career as the Commander of the 597th Transportation Brigade Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point in Southport, NC from July 1991-July 1993.
Zak was an avid fisherman, enjoyed playing golf at Oak Island CC and having a beer/wine with friends at the 19th hole, in downtown Southport, and at the VFW Post 10400 in Boiling Spring Lakes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Eleanor Zakszeski, his brother John and sister Donna.
He is survived by his wife Sharon of almost 47 years; two sons, C.J. of Winnabow, NC and Stephen and his wife Julia of Chester, MD; daughter Gayle Hubbard and her husband Jeremy of Richmond, TX; four grandchildren Conner, Mary, Mckenzie and Dewayne; brother Scott Zakszeski and wife Linda of Homosassa, Fl; sister Lynda Zakszeski and Andrew of Beverly, NJ, sister Patricia Kramer and husband Kirk of Kittery Point, ME.
