Gary Lynn Heggy, 75, of Golconda, lost his 10 year battle with lung cancer on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at Evelyn’s Hospice House in Creve Coeur, Missouri with his family by his side. He was born on July 8, 1947 in Springfield, Illinois to Leo and Geraldine Duncan Heggy. Gary married Gloria (Griffin) Elliott on September 10, 1993 and she survives.
Mr. Heggy is also survived by his daughter, Carrie (Heggy) Stevenson of Bloomington, Illinois; step-sons, Rich Roper of Carlinville, Illinois and Aaron Elliott of Springfield, Illinois, a brother, Bill Heggy of Virden, Illinois, 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Gary was a graduate of Springfield College in Springfield, Illinois. He was a Senior Public Service Administrator for the State of Illinois and retired after forty-one years of service. He represented the IL Dept. of Human Services at National Association of Reimbursement Officers (NARO) conferences for several years, and held several offices, including president, with that organization. Gary enjoyed getting together with his family, playing golf, cards, traveling, and cheering on the San Francisco 49’ers football team and Fighting Illini basketball team. He also took great pleasure in horseback riding to scenic spots, landscaping, and hanging out with his beloved dogs Bodie, Boomer (RIP) and Cowboy (RIP).
A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, February 11 at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 East Allen Street. The family will greet friends from 9:00am until the time of the funeral service, 11:00 a.m. at Bisch and Son Funeral Home. Immediately following the funeral, lunch will be served in the private room at Engrained Brewery Co., 1120 W. Lincolnshire Blvd., Springfield, IL 62711. Burial will take place after lunch at Oakwood Cemetery in Greenfield, Illinois at 2:30pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
