Bernard spent his childhood in Athens, Texas and his teen-age years in Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Kansas City in 1957 and began his collegiate studies at University of Missouri in Columbus, Missouri where he met Carol Bonaparte. They got married in 1959 and moved to Houston, Texas. Bernard graduated from Texas Southern University in 1964 with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. He joined the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department (HCJPD) as a Juvenile Probation Officer in 1966. Ten years later, he graduated with a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University in 1976. He was promoted to Deputy Chief Intake Court in 1980. In 2006, his editorial, “Mental Health Needs of Juveniles on Probation” was published in “Growing Up in Houston 2006-2008”, a publication released by the Texas charitable organization Children At Risk. He retired from HCJPD Community Service Division after over 40 years of service.
Bernard was a lifetime learner with boundless curiosity and inquisitiveness. He was an avid reader of print media including Time magazine, Houston Chronicle and The New York Times. His favorite author was John Steinbeck and he often recited quotes from “Of Mice and Men” and “Grapes of Wrath”. He had a love for plants, gardening and the outdoors. He enjoyed watching and discussing sports, current events and telling “fascinating stories”. He was an outreach volunteer for the American Heart Association.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Cook (Lewis), father, Cornelius Hunter and his wife, Carol Hunter (Bonaparte). He leaves cherished memories with his daughter, Margaret Louise Hunter, and a host of family and friends including the Joneses, the Coopers, the Crenshaws, the Jacksons, the Peltiers and all the people who enjoyed a lively conversation with Bernard. It’s never too late to make new friends.
In loving memory, please consider making a donation to one of his favorite charities: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Children At Risk, American Heart Association, Star of Hope Ministries and World Wildlife Funds.
