The lifelong Staten Islander was born in Rosebank, but moved to Concord with family when she was an infant.
She graduated from the former St. Peter's Girls High School and pursued secretarial studies at the Grace Institute in Manhattan.
Mrs. Tierney was an executive secretary for many years. She worked for States Marine Lines, a shipping company, and Sprague Shipping, both in Manhattan. She was a ward clerk at the former Doctors' Hospital in Concord for three years. She then worked for 19 years as a secretary at St. Sylvester's R.C. Church, Concord.
Quick-witted and intelligent, she enjoyed reading, had a deep interest in history and liked to solve crossword puzzles and play Scrabble. She also enjoyed sewing and needlepoint embroidery.
Mrs. Tierney was fond of traveling with her husband, James, to the Jersey Shore, where they liked to walk the boardwalk and shop. She was proud of her Irish heritage and shared its culture and traditions with her children. And she was fiercely devoted to her three generations of family.
Described as a mover, shaker and force of nature, Mrs. Tierney will be remembered for her strength, creativity, selflessness and generosity, her family said.
She was an active parishioner of St. Sylvester's Church, where she was instrumental in fundraising and organizing bingo and bus trips to New England, especially Maine, a memorable destination, her family said. She also was the church organist.
Mrs. Tierney's son, Timothy, died in 1976.
Surviving, along with James, her husband of 64 years, are her sons, James, Patrick and the Rev. Joseph Tierney; her daughters, Maureen Moynihan, Therese Hendrickson and Brigid Brady; her sister, Eileen Ryan; 15 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Sylvester's Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
