Onest Lee Mathis was born March 1, 1935 in Nashville, Georgia and passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on Saturday, April 3, 2021 after living for almost 50 years in Stockbridge, Georgia. He was well-known for his devotion to his family and his incredible kindness to all.
He is survived by the love of his life of almost 54 years, Frances Mathis and his identical twin daughters, Polly Mathis Van Duser and Paula Mathis Sacks who loved him dearly.
Onest was a US Air Force Veteran and retired after a 37-year-career from Colonial Bakery where he devoted his work life to baking delicious bread for millions of families every year.
He was a 22-year cancer survivor and his wife, daughters, and extended family were grateful for the gift of his life for many more years.
Onest is the son of the late Ruben Riley Mathis and the late Polly Ann Taylor both of Nashville, Georgia.
He will be deeply missed by his beloved Frances; his daughter, Polly, her husband, Brad, and granddaughter, Sarah; his daughter, Paula, her husband, Jonathan, and grandson, Austin; and, his stepdaughter, Lindy Casper, his granddaughter, Victoria, and great-grandchildren, Jesse, Emma, Connor, and Cora.
He was proceeded in death by 11 brothers and sisters and shared a very special bond with his sole surviving sister, Vivian Merchant of Villa Rica, Georgia. His large family gave him numerous nieces, nephews and cousins that he spent much time with over the years.
In his community, Onest had a long history as a member of the Stockbridge Masonic Lodge #691 where he treasured his many years of friendship and fellowship. He was just a few months shy of his 50th Master Mason Anniversary.
Visitation and funeral will be held at Horis A. Ward Funeral Home at 376 Fairview Road, Stockbridge, Georgia on Wednesday, April 7 where a small chapel service will be held due to Covid-19 restrictions. Interment with Military Honors and Masonic Rites will be at North Atlanta Memorial Park at 5188 Winters Chapel Road, Atlanta, Georgia at 12:30 p.m. where friends and family will gather for an outdoor ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
