
Shirley Jean Penberthy, age 80, of The Villages, Florida, passed away December 17, 2019 at her home. She was born in Warrensburg, MO, the daughter of Howard Stoneking and Veta McCormack Stoneking. She had an older brother Albert Allen Stoneking. Shirley graduated from El Dorado Springs High School, El Dorado Springs, MO. On August 23, 1970 she and Thomas Allison Penberthy were united in marriage in Warrensburg, MO. They established their first home in Pittsburg, PA along with their two children Kim Sue Wallace and John Charles Penberthy.
Shirley was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and dedicated homemaker. She was a kind generous person who had many friends. Shirley learned her great skills as a cook from her Aunt Thelma Jones. She was a very supporting wife to Tom while he went through the ranks of the Shriners. When Tom and Shirley retired in March 2009, they moved to the Villages. They made many new friends and joined the First Presbyterian Church of Wildwood. Shirley played Mahjong every Monday and Thursday afternoon, golfed weekly and organized playdates for her dog Pepper to meet her friends’ dogs. Through these activities, Shirley made some very cherished friends. Shirley and Tom looked forward, after 49 years of marriage, to a big 50th anniversary trip for 2020.
Shirley is survived by her beloved husband, Thomas; daughter Kimberly, son-in-law Evan, and son John. She is also survived by her grandchildren Megan, Eric, and Trisha McHugh, and Tiffany and Don McChesney; two nieces Sally Hunker and Susan Hunker; two nephews Jack Hunker and Krag Smith. She is also survived by a special friend, who was like a sister, Nancy Wilburn. She was preceded in death by her parents and older brother.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday afternoon, January 19 at 2:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Wildwood, with interment to follow on Monday, January 20 at 10:00 am at the Bushnell National Military Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations, made in Shirley Jean Penberthy’s name, to the Wildwood Soup Kitchen in c/o First Presbyterian Church of Wildwood.
