Bill was born on August 11, 1937 in Teaneck, N.J. to William and Grace Uber. He was graduated from Bergen Tech in 1956, served in the U.S. Army, and spent thirty-six+ years as a mechanic and superintendent at the Otis Elevator Company. He fondly told stories of the elevators he and his team helped build in bridges and buildings all over the tristate area, including those at Ellis Island.
In addition to Nancy, his loving wife of twenty-five years, Bill is survived by his daughters Stephanie Johnson of N.J. and Elizabeth Begley of Pennsylvania; stepchildren Susan and Daniel DeWeever of Cranford, N.J., Jeffrey and Danielle Santino of Sloatsburg, N.Y., and Kari and Jeff Cassidy of Lancaster, PA. Bill had eleven grandchildren.
After their marriage, Bill and Nancy lived in New Jersey, New Hampshire, on North Pond in Maine, and most recently in The Villages, Florida. They traveled internationally, especially enjoying their trips to Italy, Asia, and the Amazon.
Bill had passions for woodworking, playing golf and the banjo. He loved to entertain with his “Yet to Be Named Banjo Band” at various locales around the Bethel, Maine area. He was known for his ability to build anything and to lead any project, and supervised many of them at his camp in Maine with his family and neighbors. Bill knew "something about everything", and proudly served his Washington Township, NJ community as a member of the Planning Board, and his Maine community as the Commissioner of the Camp Road Association. With a twinkle in his eye, and his endearing and timeless sense of humor, Bill could make anyone laugh and feel at ease, both in the moment and in perpetuity. You could always count on Bill to give straightforward, experienced, and thoughtful advice about life, work, and how to build pretty much anything.
A Celebration of Life Gathering was held at Bill’s home in The Villages on Saturday, August 3, 2019. Interment will be at the Florida National Cemetery of Bushnell. Bill’s family requests that donations be made in his memory to Tutors4Kids.org, a non-profit organization of volunteers who provide free tutoring to students in local area schools.
