

Bob Merfa, a dedicated aviator and philanthropist, passed away on July 20, 2024. Born in El Paso, Texas, he spent his formative years near Andrew's Air Force Base in Maryland, where he developed a passion for aviation and civic engagement. His remarkable journey touched many lives and left an indelible mark on the aviation industry.
At the age of 17, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force, training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. As a Radio Operator and Radio Mechanic, he served overseas during the Berlin Airlift in Celle, Germany. After his military service, Bob pursued his passion for radio engineering, studying at the Capital Radio Engineering Institute in Washington D.C.
His aviation career spanned over 45 years, beginning with Eerocoupe Co. in Maryland, where he contributed to the development of the world's first "spin-proof" aircraft. Bob later worked with various aviation companies, including Martin Marietta in Colorado. In 1977, he joined Beech Aircraft in Wichita and in 1984, he became part of Boeing until his retirement on the last day of the 20th century.
Beyond aviation, Bob had a love for motorcycles and adventure. He explored the Western United States on his Harley Davidson Sportster and even journeyed to Alaska, narrowly missing the "Great Alaskan Earthquake" of 1964. His zest for life extended to his philanthropic endeavors, influenced by his close friend Mrs. Betty Dugan, who exemplified selflessness and compassion.
In retirement, Bob continued to enjoy the outdoors and cherished time with his feline friends. His legacy lives on through the positive impact he made on others and his unwavering commitment to giving back. His memory will forever inspire those who knew him.
A private service will be held at Resthaven Gardens of Memory, 11800 W. Hwy 54, Wichita, Kansas 67209.
