Hershel Lane Gammon, 65, of Winter Springs passed away at home, surrounded by his family on May 12, 2022. He was born in Nashville, TN on April 3, 1957, to Claude Hersil and Nellie Marie Howe (Wooten). After his mother's death when he was three years old, he was adopted by Jerry and Catherine Gammon of Murfreesboro, TN.
Hershel graduated from Riverdale High School, Murfreesboro, TN. Although he went to trade school for masonry, he made his career in painting and was a master at his craft.
In 1990, he married Jackie Brooks, he was always proud of his blended family; he loved his family deeply, and he bragged about them often.
When he "semi" retired he continued to work as a handyman for his established clients and worked on a "gentleman's farm" two days a week. He loved being on the farm and called it his sanctuary away from home.
Hershel was one of a kind. He was the life of every party, and a joy to be around. You knew he was there by his loud and cheerful “Whatup??” when he entered. If he ever
had a bad day, no one knew it. He had a great sense of humor and a knack for making everyone feel special. The family motto is “EVERYBODY loves Hershel”. Taking after his dad, he was a life-long practical joker. No child in his family ever quite felt safe coming out of the bathroom, not knowing which corner he would be hiding around. Whatever age they were, their Dad or Papa was that age, too!
When a neighbor mentioned a big weekend project coming up, Hershel was the guy that showed up without being asked, tools in hand, ready to help. Though friends and family picked on him for being quite a packrat, he was the guy that they came to for that one little oddball part or screw, and he would sort through buckets and boxes until he found one. His clients loved how he always took the time to do extra little things that made his workmanship stand out.
Hershel was predeceased by his parents, Jerry Thomas and Catherine Gammon (McQuiston); sisters Lisa G. Smith (Melvin) and Jackie J. Mangrum.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Jackie (Brooks); children Whitney R. Gammon, Janelle L. Hartzog, Danielle R. Smith (Joseph Poston), Sean P. McDonnell (Amanda), Brandon M. McDonnell (Faith); grandchildren Breauna, Kaylah (Franklin), Caiden, Shiloh, Daniko and Jodan; two great-grandchildren; the best brother ever, Jerry W. “Peanut” Gammon (Susie) and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He also leaves behind many clients whom he considered family. He loved that he got to watch their children and grandchildren grow up, and was just as proud of them as he was of his children. One of his favorite work stories was when he was asked if he could 'keep an eye on' a grandchild so a client could run a quick errand, and he ended up having a full-blown tea party with a precious three-year-old.
Hershel loved his rescued dogs. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to a small local pet rescue in his honor. One that Hershel has supported for years is Libby and Mace's Place, in South Carolina. https://libbyandmacesplace.weebly.com
At Hershel's request, there will be no service. He wanted folks to remember him as he was-- happy, laughing, joking. He was not a fan of sad occasions. He will forever be remembered for his loving nature, his laughter, his contagious smile, and the
happiness and joy he brought to everyone he knew.
One in a million, he will long be missed but the family finds peace
in knowing that we will see him again one day!
Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me,
though he may die, he shall live. ~John 11:25
