Charles Richard Hand, 70, passed away unexpectedly on May 18, 2022. Charlie loved to play with cars from a young age. As a master auto mechanic and the owner of Hand’s Automotive, 1572 Parsons Ave., he was a jack-of-all-trades who could fix almost anything. If someone came in with a problem, he would make it his mission to solve it.
Charlie made friends everywhere he went. He had the ability to make anyone feel like they were a better person just for knowing him. He truly loved people–rich or poor, big or small and every skin color or orientation. He made people feel comfortable and appreciated them for being themselves.
Charlie prided himself in being a baby whisperer. As one of nine children, he honed his child care skills early and always loved working with children. Not only was he a little league coach, but he also played Santa for preschoolers and the elderly.
Known to many people as Uncle Charlie, he was an extremely generous person who could talk to anyone. With broad shoulders both literally and figuratively, his friendly personality helped him to become an influential role model and father-figure to many people by showing them to how to live better lives. Whether it was teaching them how to be more self-sufficient, sharing business acumen, coaching novices through house and car repairs or helping others learn how to relax and just have a good laugh. He truly showed people how to live better lives through his actions. More than once he was willing to literally give someone the shirt off his back and the shoes off his feet.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Julia, his daughters Charleen (Charles) Horton, Hope (Michelle) Hand-Lang, step-daughter Heather (John) Gergen, grandchildren Charles Jr. and Christopher Horton, Sydney and William Gergen, Cody and Faith Hand, great-grandson Chadwick Brownfield, siblings Mary Louise Beach, Gerald R. Hand, Cathy Chaffins, Sally (John) Hunter, Sam “Russ” (Colleen) Hand, Sheryl (Tom) Shirley and several beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and all of his breakfast buddies at the Waffle House.
We like to believe that Charlie cashed in his chips to join a new card game in heaven with Elvis singing in the background. He is seated at the table with many of his old friends and family including his son Charlie, parents Dorothy and James, beloved mother-in-law Hazel Searle, brother James, brother-in-law Bill Chaffins and friends Kenny Huston, Dwight Lowery and Wanda Wells.
Surely he will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
