Historic location

Foyer at McEwen Funeral Home of MonroeOur lovely funeral home facility is located in the Historical District of downtown Monroe on South Main Street in a former private residence home. The home was built in 1903 and is a true architectural beauty with many comforting qualities. A chapel was built in 1953 with seating for up to 275 people. There's also a private family room. Our facility offers a large visitation room to accommodate extended families and friends. We also have several other smaller rooms for private and intimate gatherings. Our lighted parking area can accommodate 105 vehicles.

History

McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe was founded in 1933 by Carl J. McEwen. Upon his death in 1953, McEwen Funeral Home merged with Marshville Funeral Home. This formed a partnership between George W. Davis, nephew of Carl McEwen, Tom Lee from Marshville Funeral Home and W. T. Wall.

Ambulance service

In addition to funeral service, McEwen Funeral Home also provided a valuable ambulance service as well as air ambulance plane service. Very few communities in the United States enjoyed an air ambulance plane and there were none in the Southeast except for the 1 offered by McEwen Funeral Home. The single engine biplane saved many lives in the 30s. At the request of the federal government, McEwen Funeral Home eventually donated the plane to the war effort.

This business grows

As a result of their high standards of quality and a strong reputation in the community, the McEwen Funeral Home business grew rapidly. Another location was built in Monroe in 1935 and another location was added on East Morehead Street in Charlotte in 1947. As the business continued to grow, we added more locations: one location in Derita in 1972 and another in Pineville in 1993.

Dedicated to Monroe families

At McEwen Funeral Home, we have served Monroe and Union County with dignity for more than 80 years. We always strive to provide you with the best possible service, whether you choose a traditional funeral service or a direct cremation. Our professional and experienced team is committed to the best service possible in your time of need.

Award-winning funeral home

In 2007, we became associated with the Dignity Memorial® network. We have continued to provide the same service and compassion that our name, McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe, has always been known for. In a survey done by our local newspaper, The Enquirer-Journal, the readers of Monroe and Union County selected McEwen Funeral Home as a Reader’s Choice Winner for Funeral Homes, year after year—an award we are all honored to have received.
