Carter is a sixth-generation funeral director. Her great-great-great grandfather opened J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Petersburg, Virginia, in 1865. However, before becoming a funeral director, Carter graduated from The Culinary Institute of America. She traveled and cooked in professional kitchens from the U.S. Virgin Islands to France, New Orleans to Manhattan. In 2002, she changed careers, joining the family business at Woodlawn after earning her funeral service license at Norfolk State University.
Carter was born and raised in Danville. When she’s not working, Carter loves spending time at the beach with her daughter.
Berly Nicole Gaskins
With a background in biology, physical anthropology and restaurant management, Kimberly Gaskins decided to pursue a career in funeral service after watching the critically acclaimed television show Six Feet Under. Upon graduating valedictorian from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 2007, Kimberly worked as a funeral director in Colorado. Life then brought her to Virginia in 2013, where she continued her funeral service career while also working at the medical examiner’s office in Norfolk. She feels honored to serve families during a difficult time.
Outside of the funeral home, Kimberly keeps busy with her husband, two stepdaughters and two cats. She enjoys cooking, baking, gardening, spending time outdoors and distance running, and has lost 100 pounds along her running journey.
Liana Raquela Marasca
A recent mortuary science graduate of Tidewater Community College, Liana Marasca passed her national board examinations in 2018 and is currently a funeral services intern. She began her internship in Hampton, Virginia, and joined our team in the fall of 2019. Liana’s education also includes a background in advertising and Italian linguistics. Outside of work, she enjoys art, music, movies and baking.
