Compassionate service and funeral care

When you choose Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel, you not only receive the compassionate care you expect from a locally operated establishment but also the value you deserve from the largest network of funeral, cremation, and cemetery service providers in North America.

As we carefully guide you through the planning process, we'll discuss affordable funeral and cremation options as well as suggest innovative ways to honor life. Whether you prefer a contemporary celebration, simple cremation or traditional burial, all of our services are fully customizable. We respect your values and traditions, and we work to design a service that showcases individuality. Tell us about your loved one, including their hobbies, achievements and personality. While planning, we'll design a service with these in mind, so friends and family can experience a true celebration of life.

Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel began caring for families in the Penn Yan-Yates County area in 1918 as the Thayer-Waldo Funeral Directors and Undertakers. Archie Thayer and Theron Waldo owned and operated the funeral home until the early 1920s when Archie took over the business and changed the name to Thayer Funeral Home. Archie operated the funeral home for many decades and, shortly after the passing of his son, Archie sold the funeral home to George Townsend.

George operated the funeral home under the name of Townsend Funeral Chapel until the late 1970s when Steven P. Wood purchased the funeral home and operated as the Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel until his passing in 2006.

Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel became part of the Dignity Memorial® network of providers in 2010, and, as such, has continued to serve the Penn Yan and Yates County communities.
