Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home has been serving families in Spokane and its surrounding areas since 1910, when John B. Hazen and Charles P. Jaeger opened their funeral home in the residential area of North Monroe Street. Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home was the first provider of mortuary services outside of the business district of Spokane. This concept was so well-received by the Spokane community that the founders soon recognized the need for a larger facility.
Expansion and growth
In 1922, John and Charles opened their newly built funeral home at 1306 North Monroe Street, a stately facility specially designed to meet the funeral needs of the Spokane community with a vast chapel, multiple slumber rooms, a modern embalming facility and a state-of-the-art crematory. Once again, the community response was so positive that the facility was expanded in 1927 to add a second, more intimate chapel and additional “slumber” rooms—commonly known today as visitation rooms.
A leader in the profession
Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home has been a leader in the funeral service profession since its early days when John served as the first president of the National Embalmers’ Association and as president of the Washington State Association of Morticians for 8 years.
Upon the construction of their crematory facility in the early 1920s, Hazen & Jaeger was among the first businesses to provide cremation service to Spokane and to smaller communities throughout the Inland Empire and beyond. Over the years, Hazen & Jaeger has provided cremation service to more than 50 other funeral homes in Spokane, the Palouse, Cheney, Deer Park and Colville, as well as in Central Washington, North Idaho, Montana and Canada.
